Black and White: A Revival of Taiwanese Dramas
Saturday May 23, 2009 Taiwan

Taiwanese idol dramas have always been notoriously known for handsome boys and pretty girls, fictional romance, and luxurious things that are far from reality. Being pressured by Korean and Japanese dramas, Taiwan's low-cost production has been incapable of continually capturing the audiences' hearts. In such an embarassing situation, if there is a director and actor of a drama that are daring enough to break this trend and establish a new standard for Taiwanese dramas, that courage is enough to name that drama as unusual. Even before the broadcasting of "Black and White" directed by Cai Yue Xun and starring Vic Zhou (Zai Zai), the audience has already been anticipating this.
Before broadcasting, Director Cai and Zai Zai said that they hope "Black and White" will set a new standard in Taiwanese TV dramas. At that time, many people laughed at their whimsical wishes. However, ever since the drama started airing, the ratings continued to soar each week.
Abandoning the usual idol drama romance, "Black and White" courageously incorporates a rare drama topic; two young police officers that are trying to bring justice to the city. Zai Zai's role is a playful officer who fears death, loves to flirt with girls, and has a hidden secret. The other police officer, played by newbie Mark Zhao, is the exact opposite of Pi Zi. He has a bad temper and hates evil like an enemy. Speaking of casting, no one other than Director Cai is capable of casting Zai Zai as Pizi. It is surprising that Zai Zai is able to get rid of his "pretty boy" image for a police image.
"Black and White" is definitely a drama filled with sincerity. Filming of one episode cost roughly $4,000,000NTD. $48,000,000NTD has already been spent on the first ten episodes, comparing to other dramas that have spent $7,800,000NTD. You can say that this drama isn't hesitant about costs and is intended to do it's best. The magnificent scenes, life-like explosions, and the high-speed camera angles makes this drama full of Hollywood drama momentum. The drama is filled with an exciting plot, even having the two actors advancing on a high speed train. Netizens have said that, "Each episode is like watching a movie." Faced with increasingly conservative investors that wants to reduce production costs and a lack of imagination for creative scenes, "Black and White" is able to give hope to the Chinese drama practitioners. It will even allow audiences that have given up on Taiwanese dramas to say "Taiwanese idol dramas can be very good!"

Black & White, Episode 11
Posted by: irugnotmis on: May 17, 2009

When the hooded men dropped from the sky, the poor vagrant quivered in fright and slurred hastily, pleading forgiveness for his misconduct. He says, “I’m sorry… I was hungry… I didn’t mean to take the stuff… Don’t hurt me!” Relentlessly, the men came after him. They zapped him unconscious and transported him onto a cold operating table…
When he woke up, he found himself in an elegantly furnished, spacious house. Disoriented and thirsty, the nameless vagrant staggered to the marble desk and chugged on the glass of water. Then remembering the mismatch between the polished environment and himself, he dropped the glass and apologized to no one in particular that he was very sorry to have touched someone else’s belonging. Mumbling feebly that none of this was intentional — it was a reflex out of the need for survival — he tottered on.
He moved past the table and stopped at the doorway. Transfixed by the incandescent light shining on him from the outside, he stood motionless for a prolonged beat.
When he recollected himself and proceeded to survey around the room, he came upon another table. On it, carefully laid out money, ID, bank statement, badge, as well as a certificate of enrollment for police training school, which presumably belonged to the owner of the house. Staring at the photo on the paper, the vagrant read the name aloud, “Chen Zai Tian…”.
He continued staggering, apologizing tremulously all the while that he was sorry to have touched the money that didn’t belong to him — until he came upon a mirror. He caught the sight of his reflection and jumped back in horror — who’s this man staring back at him? Cautiously but curiously, he inched closer to the mirror and touched his face.
Not yet realizing he is now Chen Zai Tian and Chen Zai Tian is him, a wave of panic washed over him. He ran to the kitchen and came back with a large trash bag. Rapaciously, he started to stuff everything within hand’s reach into the bag, taking with him the luxury items he has only dared to dream of possessing.
(I have a few comments about this segment. First, it’s realistically played. Everything, save the peculiarity of the situation itself, is believable — except for the fact that given the extensiveness of the surgery, his face would and should be swelling at this point. But wth, it’s still a highly enjoyable segment to watch. For what it’s worth, the part where Zai Tian touched his face as if asking “who am I?” echoes the beginning of Episode 5. It may come up again, it may not. It’s just nice to see concordance. Ok, back to recap:)
The vagrant returned to the Mc Donalds he robbed on Christmas eve and saw the same waitress who serviced him. When she showed no sign of recognition, he carefully asked about the aftermath of the robbery. She expressed sympathy towards the robber, saying that the man must be desperate to resort to rob. She noted that the man robbed for burger but not for money, his intention mustn’t be bad. Therefore, she paid for the loss and told the store manager to let the matter drop.
Back in the present, Chen Lin and Hero continue their search for Zai Tian. Hero consoles that given the severity of the blow, Zai Tian must be in need of some privacy to readjust. Chen Lin disagrees, thinking the longer they leave matters unattended, the worse it will get. So intent in finding Zai Tian that she nearly called Wild Goose to help for the search — this sparked friction between Hero and Chen Lin. (Her intentions are good, but gee, she’d make one demanding, snappy girlfriend.)
Hero opposes Chen Lin’s decision to seek help from Wild Goose, thinking this is an inappropriate move. A little too protective: Chen Zai Tian is a police after all, he will eventually man up about the bereavement. Chen Lin bites Hero’s head off of his disagreement, thinking it’s Hero’s superiority complex at work. (Referring back to the Cops are better than Cons idea.)
Voices are raised, unpleasantries exchanged. Hero emphasized that this is not about who is better than who, this is about different search methods (and the issue of stepping over boundaries — Chen Lin is acting more like a girlfriend than a tentative friend). In the end, Chen Lin gives Hero the ultimatum: she is losing patience. She wants to find Chen Zai Tian and it doesn’t matter if Hero disagrees with her method, she will find him at all cost.
Hero gets a call from Hulk, asking to meet. Interestingly, things take a slightly different turn.
Hulk heard from his colleague that Hero suspects that he might be the spy. To prove his innocence, he risks the danger of being put on probation and gives Hero the disk that contains Director Lin’s schedule and as well as other relevant information.
Chen Lin finds Wild Goose and begs him to look for Zai Tian. Teary eyed, she explains that since his disappearance, she hasn’t been able to sleep. Wild Goose gives her a hard look and nods, “I understand. I will see to it.”
As a result of the recent events, Hero is feeling under the weather. He tells Xi Ying,
Recently, I feel spent all the time. There’s always this listless feeling hanging over me. Recall during my PTS days, the training officer would always say the higher the expectation, the greater the disappointment. These unsolved cases and puzzling clues make me wonder, from time to time, if I’m overestimating my abilities.
Xi Ying assures him that he is indeed an excellent police. It’s not that they are incompetent at finding the answer, it’s just that each time they get close, an unknown force will cut off the clues. She reinforces that they might be watched (Aha! Recurring theme!) Therefore, before Hero is absolutely sure of someone, he shouldn’t disclose any information easily.
Hero considers the advice and goes to look for Xiao Ma. He finds Xiao Ma readying himself to close the hot dog stand and asks for six more orders. While Xiao Mai is preparing the hot dogs, Hero stands back and observes.
There is nothing extraordinary about Xiao Ma’s hot dog stand, but Hero notices that Xiao Ma’s personal ride, his motorcycle, looks particularly out of place. The motorcycle is a thing of beauty, making Xiao Ma either a car/bike enthusiast or a man with a secret.
When Xiao Ma completes the orders and asks for the bill, Hero raises two handful of bagged hot dogs and explains he doesn’t have an open hand to get his wallet out. He then shrewdly asks Xiao Ma to reach into his pocket for him to take out the wallet — for Xiao Ma’s prints. (In passing: if it were any other show, I’d say there’s an homoerotic undertone right there. Come on, running your hand down someone else’s pants pocket? It’s an awkward gesture unless two people are very, very close.)
(More side comments: Technically, Xiao Ma could refuse to retrieve the wallet. He could volunteer to free Hero’s hands instead — this man is too smart, too careful to miss the obvious alternative. Choosing to do what Hero wants him to do, that is, to leave his finger prints, may mean he’s intentionally giving Hero a clue. OR I’m just reading too much into it.)
When Hero focuses his attention on something, he gives his 100%. Immediately after he gets Xiao Ma’s prints, he goes to the bar Chen Zai Tian often goes to wait for the fax.
He hands the bartender a sheet of paper that says “To Chen Zai Tian’s informant: Please find Chen Zai Tian” and he wants her to fax the paper. She asks, “Do you know the fax number?” He replies lightly, “I think you know” and exits. But he doesn’t leave quite yet.
He remains at the door and watches as the bartender punches number on the fax machine and sends the message to the unknown end. Satisfied, he calls Hulk and asks him to find out the number dialed.
On the other end of the phone line, a similar looking fax machine spits out Hero’s message. A hand reaches over to grab the paper. Reading the two simple lines silently, Da Yang frowns.
Hero and Chen Lin continue to search for Zai Tian. A stroke of luck brought them to a slum where a group of young adults are beating up a man for thievery. Hero shoos away the troublemakers and realizes that lying amongst the trash is a bruised and battered Chen Zai Tian. They approach him and help him up. He protests vehemently, busting out his gun at his two worrisome friends.
Angered by what she sees, Chen Lin snaps, “Look what you’ve become because of that girl… We are your friends!”
Distressed still, Chen Zai Tian yells,
“What do you know? You don’t know anything! … Lemme tell you the truth, I don’t even need to give up on myself. Cuz I never had anything in the first place. In this world, she is the only one who’s nice to me besides my mom. She’s the only one who looked at me when everybody else ran away from me. She is real. My face, everything I have, and you two… are fabricated…. She let me know I was alive once…
“If you think Hero and I aren’t real,” Chen Lin says in a quiet voice as she moves closer to Zai Tian, “Then shoot me. If we don’t matter to you.” She guides his gun to her forehead. Zai Tian stood there staring at her, a second passed, then his arm went limp. Hero walks up and gently removes the gun from Zai Tian’s hand. “It’s okay”, he tells Zai Tian, “it’s… okay.”
Alone in the police department, Hulk looks up Xiao Ma’s prints. He gets a positive match of a man named Huang Shi Kai from the Marine corp. The man has an impressive record of being outstanding in all areas. Shooting, fighting, judo, there is nothing he hasn’t won an award for. What’s noteworthy is that according to his record, he died in battle three years ago.
Immediately after Hulk looked up Marine man Huang’s record, the phone rings. Startled, Hulk nearly fell off his seat.
Ever since Hero and Chen Lin brought Zai Tian home, he’s been sitting there, lost in thought. While Hero busies himself cleaning up the messy² place, Chen Lin acts chummy with the stone sculpture Chen Zai Tian.
She kneels down beside him and hands him a glass of water. Putting a hand on Zai Tian’s, Chen Lin coos softly, “Do you want a drink? Or, do you want to rest first?”
Hero looks on sadly at Chen Lin’s increasingly transparent affection.
Before Hero’s affliction can intensify, a phone call distracts him. Hulk brings Hero two pieces of information. The first, on Xiao Ma’s true identity. The second, on where the fax was being sent earlier in the day.
When Hero hangs up, anger and hurt filled his eyes and his voice. Feeling betrayed, he turns to Chen Lin and Zai Tian and says curtly,
“Now I know… how I’ve been fooled.”
Hero pushes Chen Lin out of the door, he has something to discuss with Chen Zai Tian.
An intense confrontation thus commences. Hero charges Zai Tian for being San Lian Hui’s spy, Zai Tian barks back that he has no reason to purposely expose himself by bringing Hero to the fax machine in the first place. Flustered in disappointment, Hero cries, “How can you live the muddy life you are leading? Have you never thought to find out what happened?” Facing Hero’s misunderstanding, Zai Tian swallows his bitterness down the throat. Instead, he asks Hero, “Why did you find me then? Why did you save me from myself?”
Stunned for a second, Hero replies, “You are right. I should’ve left you to be. Because a person like you deserve to be in a garbage pile.” (Oh man oh man, that realllllllly hurts.)
After Hero leaves, Zai Tian slumps down on the couch, exhausted by the seemingly never ending current of emotional trauma.
Chen Lin chases after Hero, determined to find out what went wrong. She does find out but she’s also left with a question: between Zai Tian, Hero and herself, what is their relationship?
She enters her car and rests her head on the steering wheel, thinking about Hero’s words. Suddenly, it starts to rain. (SYMBOLISM!!)
Meanwhile at Zai Tian’s home, he has a few visitors.

When Chen Lin appeared in Episode 1, I was charmed by her mischievousness. But as the plot progresses, that piece of her vanishes. Character inconsistency? I don’t know. All I know is that Chen Lin’s character is becoming more and more disagreeable stagnant. At first, the edge gives her a personality that offsets Xi Ying’s passivity. It was easy to overlook the sassy, feisty temperament as amusing, even galvanizing. But she seems to freeze in that mode of snappish irascibility since then and it’s starting to look tiresome.
Very briefly, about the rain. It came on so suddenly yet so delightfully. The reason I’m raving about it is that it’s a very poetic way of announcing an upcoming change. Not an uncommon approach, but you just don’t see this kind of touch in a TW drama.

Comments

Black & White, Episode 7
credit thank : iurgnotmis.wordpress.com
On the outside, the ostentatious team leader Chen brought reporters to the black market for fame; on the inside, the Delightful Duo have been strapped and hung from the ceiling for humiliation (and warning).
(Must they wear black and white respectively all the time?)
The (wonderful) irony is blind to the boastful team leader, so when he sees the majestic sight of his two best agents suspended in midair, a wave of panic replaces his previous self-acclamation. (Instead of letting the two men down first,) Chen shouts for his underlings to keep the reporters out. (Is this supposed to be funny? ‘Cos I can’t stop grinning.)
When Zai Tian and Hero are finally released from their hangman position, what awaits them is the wrath of their boss. Fortunately, not all of the “evidences” are gone. Zai Tian still has the small collection of guns that he bought from his attackers.
Team leader Chen is happy to see the guns, but once he learns the method in which they are acquired (bought through illegal means), his frustration level shoots up. Through stomped feet and gridded teeth, he rebukes that this is not how the police operates — so exasperated, that he almost pulled out his hair.
Hero on the other hand, is thinking on his feet. For San Lian Hui to remove all the guns in such short notice, they need a vehicle to transport the weapons. Without explaining himself, he pulls off a 100 meter dash towards the gatekeeper’s booth for a log of the outgoing trucks. Thinking out loud, Hero reasons that if they procure all the security camera recordings for the time frame after they were knocked unconscious and trace the direction the only outgoing truck is heading, they may be able to find the weapons after all.
All these talks about security cameras have a peculiar effect on Zai Tian. He walks towards the protruding camera on the side of the booth and speaks to it directly, “Did you know, I’ve always found the person who invented security cameras fascinating. For us police to look for criminals, wives to find their husbands’ mistresses, and teachers to catch students cheating, they all rely on security cameras.” (More on this later.)
In the Investigation Room, Xi Yi finds a perfect match between the contour of the bullet from the stolen rifle and the one that terminated Ke Le’s life — the same gun was used on both occasions. So the new question is, was the sniper also affected by the economic repression that he has to seek out a new career path? — why did the killer suddenly go rob a bank?
The next day at the police station, Hulk briefs the Delightful Duo on his progress with tracking the questionable truck that may have been transporting the weapons. At the end of the brief, Zai Tian casually suggests that on the night the rifle was stolen, a computer savvy person hacked into the system. As the computer expert on staff, maybe Hulk should look into it and find out who did it. Hulk looks troubled at first, but he agrees nonetheless. (More on this later.)
Their conversation is interrupted when Lao Li drops a big pile of files on the desk. These are the files on Director Lin, who seemed to be hiding something. According to the files, she graduated first of her class from PTS (Police Training School). Once she became a detective, there is virtually no case she could not solve. Despite the immaculate record, however, there is one case that connects Director Lin back to San Lian Hui.
Du Wen Yan AKA Da Yan (or Wild Goose, taken from the last word of his name), was arrested on multiple charges related to illegal possession of arms back in 1980. Now, he is the Southern regional master for San Lian Hui.
Guess who caught him and put him in jail? Director Lin. There is more to it. Ever since Mr. Badass became famous in the criminal circle, he’s been clever enough to not get caught. So the jail term in 1980 was his first time. That makes motive.
You know what’s bad timing? This is bad timing: right when the detectives are connecting the pieces to San Lian Hui, San Lian Hui’s princess calls.
When Hero doesn’t pick up (I know how that sounds, but he didn’t purposely not pick up. He just missed that call.), she texts him instead, mumbling almost lovingly that, “You have a phone, but you never pick it up.” The text message says, “Hero, want to go watch a movie together?” Bad, BAD timing.
While in the investigation lab looking over the evidences, Xi Ying gets a call from Hulk, asking her to inform Hero of a recent discovery. Leaving the room with Zai Tian, Hero briefly tells Xi Ying that they had asked Hulk to help find out the — if you will — spy. Xi Ying reluctantly tells them to forget about pursuing that line of inquiry, because, “Someone forged my ID to enter the forensic lab and hacked into the computer system to shut down the security cameras… That person must have extensive knowledge in computers…” She rather turn a blink eye to it than let the ugly truth be revealed.
“You are suspecting Hulk?”, Hero is surprised, “I’ve known him since PTS. He’s not that kind of person.” Xi Ying retorts,
“People are never static beings. Many factors can influence a person. You need to be more cautions, because the enemy is nearer than you think. It could be anyone.”
(Why is this guy so funny?)
After n hours of intensive video watching, Hulk finally figures out where the truck loaded the guns. At midnight, the truck discreetly enters San Lian Street (Dang, they get to have a street named after their organization!? That’s influence! And wealth!). Before it enters, the three green lights on the truck are all lit up — meaning it’s overloaded. When it exits the San Lian building, only one green light is on — now it’s empty. Where else could the guns go?
Hero decides to get to the bottom of this, but getting a search warrant and getting the operation approved become a problem. Team leader Chen is right, without solid proof, tampering with San Lian Hui is equivalent to a death wish. Reasoning aside, Team Leader Chen’s laissez faire attitude towards all San Lian Hui related incidents infuriates Hero.
To rock the boat, he yells after Chen, “What are you afraid of? Do you not want to solve the cases? … If it weren’t for you who made Xi Ying leave that day, the rifle would NOT have been stolen! ” (That was inappropriate. Gutsy, but still inappropriate.)

Black & White, Episode 6

A forced kiss turns into a consensual kiss. As the two fall into bed and share a prolonged beat of gaze locking, the embarrassment of young love kicks in. They roll onto their sides and part as quickly as possible. (SEXUAL TENSION!)
Feeling guilty for sharing a kiss with the girl Hero has feelings for, Zai Tian struggles to come clean with Hero. Unfortunately, he’s cut off by Hulk, who provides the agents with information on the sniper. Che Jing, the man from San Lian Hui who picked up Chen Lin from the police station the last time she was held in custody, is one of the few expert shooters. Just as the Delightful Duo connect the dots with San Lian Hui, a phone call comes in and puts a temporary halt on the discussion: the killer is caught.
The killer is said to have a criminal record. Shortly after he was released from prison, he started stalking Ke Le. He confessed to killing her and claimed to have tossed the gun into the river. The Northern Branch is currently searching for the gun. Everything sounds reasonable on the surface. Perhaps too reasonable that it beings to looks fishy. Like someone is trying to wrap up the death quickly so the real murderer can get away.
Hero is unconvinced and wants to pursuit the case further. His supervisor objects to the idea, but the quest for truth rings louder than the necessity to follow order.
Discussing the case separately with Zai Tian, Hero raises a few blind spots that had him scratch his head in puzzlement:
1. Lin Ke Le’s visit to the police station is not a prearranged event. The sniper must have monitored her activity and decided to kill her that morning. Chen Zai Tian’s late arrival happened to give the sniper time to choose a perfect location for the assignment. So the fundamental question is, why was Ke Le followed? What got her killed?
2. Why did the sniper chose to kill Ke Le in Chen Zai Tian’s presence? Why not earlier, when she was alone? What was the sniper waiting for?
3. Why didn’t the sniper kill Chen Zai Tian as well?
4. Why was the Southern Branch director so afraid that Ke Le might have told Zai Tian something before she died?
As Hero and Zai Tian finish their lunch and head out, they spot a few masked robbers with rifles. Zai Tian instinctively calls for back up while Hero charges at them. He kills one man and runs after the others, even as the criminals drive away in a car. Uncompromising, Hero goes after the car, shooting at the car’s rear window and tire to slow them down.
The car is forced to stop further down the street. As Hero tries to make way towards the parked car, a cranky old passerby pulls over in front of the two cops, yelling and swearing at them for blocking the road.
As the argument prolongs, two black vans pull up by the parked car and out pours more men (and woman) in arms. Not wanting to be a live target, the two cops duck behind the car that belongs to the passerby for shelter. (See, this is what you get for being nosy and grumpy!) While covering his ears in mortification, Zai Tian screams at Hero, “You’ll get me killed! You’ll get me Killed!”
Hero, completely ignoring Zai Tian, breaks the window of the car they are using as a shield and starts shooting back from the open space.
(Does anyone else find this scene unintentionally funny?)
Having wasted enough bullets, the leader of the group orders everyone to go. And puff they are gone. When everything quiets down again, Hero and Zai Tian come out from hiding and return to the spot where one of the robbers was killed. But his corpse is already gone.
When the authorities arrive at the scene, Hero’s costly method at a crime scene is once again, the target of ridicule. (Which, is a valid concern. Aside from catching the bad guys, the police should also protect the citizens.)
After Xi Ying’s thorough look-through at the crime scene, she declares insufficient evidence: these robbers are extremely professional. Not only do their guns make small entry wounds — meaning, minimal blood spillage and hence very limited blood sample for DNA testing — they are able to move the corpse and clean up the crime scene under a short amount of time. These robbers are really something. (Oh hideously large Chinese subtitles, I thank thee. For without thee, I would NOT be able to make out of Janine Chang’s speech from her slurred words — WHAT is with TW actors and their inability to enunciate?!)
Even though I have problem getting through Xi Ying’s unclear line delivery, Hero has no trouble. On the contrary, her report on the crime scene reminds him of something.
As much as these above screencaps look like fan service shots where Mark takes off his shirt and flex us some manly muscle, it’s really not.
To be continued

Recap BnW episod 5
credit thank : iurgnotmis.wordpress.com
Time is pulled back to three years ago.
Recovering from his outburst, Zai Tian meanders along the streets and caught his reflection in the display window. He turns curiously and studies himself. With a slight hint of self loath, he reaches a hand and covers his face with the palm. Slowly extending all five fingers, he gasps his face as if it were a mask. Then, he lowers his hand and touches his reflection.
(I really like this scene. The arrangement of this scene is very simple — an actor and a reflecting surface — yet it conveys both a powerful emotional undertone and a creepy ambiance. Nice.)
With a bag of questions, Zai Tian seeks out Gao Yi.
Gao Yi teases, mean-spiritedly, that for a man with a history, it must be frustrating to be recognized and not know how and why he’s recognized. Zai Tian loses his temper and pulls out his gun. He threatens darkly,
“You better tell me who turned me into the way I am today.”
Shrewdly, Gao Yi replies, “I was captured on behalf of dealing and spreading drugs. The most I get is life imprisonment. But if I accidentally slip out a little too much, I may only have an hour left to live.”
Time is pulled back to three years ago.
A filthy homeless man is loitering in front of a McDonald’s. He looks into the transparent brickwall glass wall and peeps at the other side of the room, the one filled with warmth, laughter, and food. Like the Danish little match girl, he can feel envy and loneliness swelling inside of him, filling him with an impulse to… do something.
He takes out a blunt instrument from underneath his ragged garment and bursts into the fast food restaurant.
His hands shaking with hunger, his voice unsteady with fear, he grabs a female customer and threatens to kill her with the blunt instrument. A crispy voice from across the room brought him back and brought him over to the other side of the bell jar. She simply asked him, “Are you hungry?”
What happened next was a blur to him. He remembered waking up one morning with a new face, a new identity, a new house, and a post-it with a single line written on it:
Don't scratch your face within the next month.
With Zai Tian running off on his own, Chen Lin and Hero are left to finish the five hands of beer Zai Tian ordered. On the way home, Chen Lin jokes that they should make Zai Tian buy them dinner again and gather a lot of people to eat until Zai Tian goes broke paying for it. She then mentions that they should invite Xi Ying as well and observes as Hero remains tacit.
In front of Chen Lin’s apartment, the happy mob boss daughter turns to say goodbye. She thanks Hero for walking her home and heads inside. Then thinking of something, she turns back and says,
“The happiest memories of my life are from the time period before my mother died. That’s when my father started San Lian Hui and became extremely busy. To see him, my mother and I would stay in his car and use the brief travel time to talk to him. But whenever the car pulls up in front of the San Lian building, I would refuse to go home. To appease me, my father would carry me on a piggy back ride and go from the first floor to the 12th floor. Once he did that, I’m pacified and happy. He would hand me over to my mother in front of the elevator. I would then rest my head on my mother’s bosom and wait for the next opportunity to see my father.
Maybe Dreamer magnified that piece of memory, but when you carried me out today, your shoulder reminds me of my father. And the time when my mother is still alive. Thank you. Thank you for bringing back my happiest memory.”
(My first reaction when I heard “your shoulder reminds me of my father“, is “O! A Freudian touch on the Electra complex!” But-uh, I don’t think the readers here will appreciate the joke. So, I will settle for the more generic and slightly boring, shoulder=comfort=security interpretation.)
The next morning when Zai Tian shows up for work, he is promptly informed of a certain unhappy Miss Lin Ke Le waiting for him on the roof. Disconcerted, he greets her on the roof. Ke Le looks distraught.
When asked what went wrong, she says, “Yesterday I found out…” A loud bang finishes the sentence for her. As a bullet penetrates Ke Le’s skull, she falls (gracefully) with a thud and is dead instantly.
The death becomes a major event that involves both the Southern and Northern branch. While the Northern branch’s involvement has to do with Ke Le being the branch director’s daughter, sadly, the murder case sets the stage for an ugly internal power struggle between the two branches.
In the interrogation room, the anguished mother questions Zai Tian personally.
But no matter how she demands to know more, it’s always the “before she could say anything, she’s shot” explanation. (Minor point: if the director had put her finger on the trigger instead of holding the gun like one would with a knife, this scene (see picture above right) would maybe look more disheartening and definitely more convincing.)
Finally, Lao Li provides a piece of new information, though it unveils no mystery. According to him, Ke Le arrived at the police station at 8:30 am and asked to see Zai Tian. Lao Li informed her that he won’t be in until much later. She absent mindedly replied that she will wait and asked for a cup of coffee. Lao Li observed that Ke Le looked troubled. Her makeup was uneven, she seemed unusually pensive, and nothing like her normal lively self. But she wouldn’t say what was bothering her.
Later that day Hero waits in front of the investigation room for a chance to talk to Xi Ying.
She confirms that the bullet is shot from a long range, which excludes Zai Tian from the suspect list — as long as there is no evidence to indicate that he aided the sniper in any way. Relieved slightly, Hero awkwardly mentions the dinner party last night. He admits that he was surprised to see her there, partially because he knows she isn’t fond of drinking and must have felt out of place there. She nods in agreement. Then he ventures on to explain Chen Lin’s presence, saying that being the mob boss’ daughter, Chen Lin doesn’t have any friends so Zai Tian and him are… Xi Ying cuts him off and replies lightly, “You don’t need to feel obligated to explain anything.” To which Hero replies, “But you are a very important friend to me.” (Just a friend? That must’ve hurt! But at least, he’s not leading her on.)
Disappointed, Xi Ying tries to put on a smile. When she is unable to do so, she says instead, “You are a very important friend to me too” and turns to leave.
Hero brings food for Zai Tian in the interrogation room. Hasn’t eaten anything, Zai Tian devours the food ravenously. Taking the opportunity, Hero asks, “Do you really not know what Ke Le came here for?” “How should I know?”, Zai Tian replies between bites, “I’m sad she’s dead too!” “Don’t you think the director acted a little strange while she was interrogating you?” Hero wonders to himself.
In an empty parking lot, the said director is crying on the phone,
“Why did you have to do that? She has nothing to do with it! … How can you do that to me?! …
… … No, No you can’t do that! For this, I’ve, I’ve already… I… … Ok, I know… I won’t back out…”
Finally released from a day of confinement, Zai Tian receives a text message, reminding him to pay his credit card bill. Pissed off, he raises the phone to the air and yells, “Hey, didn’t you want me to be a cop? Then what’s with this crap? Keep it up, I’m gonna call it a quit! So, pay my credit card bills ASAP! Oh and, go find the sniper too!”
(Hey! That’s a great stress coping mechanism! Just make sure no one is around when you give it a try.)
Hulk happens to pass by the parking lot and sees Zai Tian’s hilarious behavior. He follows Zai Tian’s extended arm to find a point of fixation, then, when Zai Tian is gone, he imitates it!
(This is another scene I really liked. It’s an appropriate comic relief, not too cheesy, not too goofy. Nicely done.)
No matter what kind of mess Zai Tian is in, he always comes back as if nothing is wrong. This time, he’s bought Xi Ying a cup so that when she wants a drink, she doesn’t need to use a measuring cup anymore — and he, won’t ever mistake rabbit urine for iced tea. (Honestly, no matter how scientifically geared one may be, drinking from a measuring cup is just nasty.) As Xi Ying looks into Zai Tian’s face in close proximity, she remarks on the “perfect” curvature of his facial features. (And “perfect” is her word.) He leans in, intending to steal a kiss, but Hero shows up at the door and pulls him away from Xi Ying. They found where the sniper was shooting.
According to the evidences, the sniper shot the victim from a distance of 500 - 600 meter, using a 5.5 caliber shotgun instead of a sniper rifle — meaning, the sniper is the best of the best. That narrows the range of snipers down to only the elite ones.
Still thinking about the night when he caught a glimpse of Xiao Mei, the girl who made him who he is now, Zai Tian returns to the bar, hoping to bump into her. Not much luck. He dangles his feet on a low bar and closes his eyes, muttering to himself, “Dear God, if you are as omnipotent as advertised, please, let my Goddess appear right now.”
“What are you doing here?” a voice starts. Still immersed in the wishful thinking, he shakes his head slowly and repeats to himself, “NO, not this voice…” When he finally opens his eyes, he is startled by Chen Lin’s presence. (It’s a sign!)
She follows him into his car and makes herself comfortable there. Normally, Zai Tian wouldn’t refuse if any girl throws herself at him, but today is different. He’s waiting for Ah Mei to appear. When Chen Lin asks him to take her home because she drank and couldn’t drive, Zai Tian impatiently refuses her. Too tipsy to notice, Chen Lin blabbers on about Zai Tian running off at the bar the other day and leaving Hero and her alone.
Her mentioning of Ah Mei makes Zai Tian uncomfortable. His odd silence tips her off. Abashed, Chen Lin tries to joke her way out of it. By then, Zai Tian, who can see for himself that she is really on the verge of being drunk, offers to take her home. She refuses and gets out of his car, but her skirt gets caught between the doors.
Once he starts up his car, she is dragged forward. When he finally stops, the force of the stop pushes her forward and tears the skirt in the front. Just as she bends down to cover up her embarrassment, a passing by motorcycle splashed water all over her. Now, Chen Zai Tian has to give her a ride.
And… he takes her to his house. (When it’s a lot easier if he just drops her off at her own place.)
(The plot here is a little contrived, but I’ll go with it.)
Wet and groggy, Chen Lin demands to know where the restroom is. But Zai Tian takes his sweet time to get her a towel first, then looks through his closet twice until he finally settles on a shirt he’s willing to dispense for Chen Lin to change into. (His closet is pathetic for a self-congratulatory man like him.)
Once Chen Lin is in the restroom, Zai Tian muses himself and hurries to undress. (No, not that way. Just taking off the gun hoister and the belt. But, he sure needs to prepare himself for an eventful night.)
After Chen Lin has showered and felt clean, she starts to check out Zai Tian’s house. She takes notices of He Xiao Mei’s photo on the wall and lifts it to see. Not wanting anyone to trod on the sanctity of his vulnerability, Zai Tian fights to get the photo back.
But being the feisty little beast that she is, Chen Lin isn’t going to give it up without a fight.
In the end, Zai Tian has to lift Chen Lin up for her to surrender. In response, Chen Lin bites Zai Tian for being careless around her.
Zai Tian: “What did you do that for?”
Chen Lin: “Who told you you could lift me up?”
Zai Tian: “Not like it’s the first time.”
Chen Lin perks up at the mention of “not the first time”. She demands to know what he means by that. Zai Tian denys the significance in what he just said, but Chen Lin wouldn’t let him slide on this one. When Zai Tian continues to doge her question, she becomes angry and asserts that unless he provides her with a satisfactory response, she will not let him go.
Zai Tian responds, “Oh so you want to stay for the night? That’s fine by me.” Chen Lin attacks at the provocation, but Zai Tian blocks her off from trying to throw him across her shoulder. As they struggle to strike and to avoid being stricken, Zai Tian ends up holding Chen Lin.
Then, to her greatest dismay, he presses his lips on hers and kisses her.
Comments:
I really enjoyed this episode, more so than the previous four. It’s a shame how the ratings are still ridiculously low.
In regards to the fight segment between Chen Lin and Zai Tian at the end of the episode, I really like the dynamics formed around the tension between them. And I mean the uncomfortable, pain in the neck kind of tension. They get on each other’s nerves and take each other out of their comfort zone. Chen Lin’s repeated intrusion on the piece of memory Zai Tian carefully guards makes Zai Tian ill at ease. Likewise, Zai Tian’s disregard of Chen Lin’s mob boss’ daughter status (i.e. lifting her and not treating her like a lady) throws Chen Lin off as well.
What’s great about it is that beneath the edginess they both feel, there is a deeper layer of sexual tension blooming between them. And whether Chen Lin reciproates it or not, we’ll find out in the next episode.
