In order to break into the rank of an actor with strength, Zai Zai no longer yearn for the outer appearance of a noble prince. In the PTV and TVBS-G drama “Black & White”, he transformed his face to become a vagabond, his handsome face was painted with oil paint and become "beancurd" face. His whole body was also covered with oil paint, but because the make-up artist was shy, Zai Zai's "important body parts" was left clean/ white.

Since its broadcast, “Black & White” receives high praise, and now even CTV may want to broadcast the drama. In the play Zhao You Ting, KingOne performance was outstanding, Zai Zai is also no longer a noble prince but this time he acted as Ruffian (PiZi) Chen Zai Tian. After his girlfriend died in a bombing, Chen ZaiTian became despondent and disappeared, turning into a tramp. He was so cold and hungry that he robbed a fast food store.

This time, Zaizai has to change himself into an ugly tramp. To create the equivalent look of the hunchback of Notre Dame for ZaiTian, Director Cai spent hundreds of thousands of Taiwan dollars to hire a special-effect make-up artist from Hollywood. Zaizai tested the make-up several times. Glue was first put on his face and then the mold was placed. Zaizai's skin is of the sensitive type. Moreover, his face was tightly covered, which made him sweat badly, and his face become "beancurd" face. It took 3 hours to do the make-up. However, the make-up would melt due to the temperature and could last only 4 hours. Because the make up kept melting, adjustment on the lighting have been adjusted many times and even have to use glue to paste the mold directly on the face again.

Zaizai's clothing was sprayed with oil paint. But as soon as Dir Cai looked at Zaizai through the camera lens, he was surprise to see "why is ZZ's important body parts of the body so clean/ white?" It was only later that he realised that the make up artist is a female and was too shy to cover Zai's certain body parts with oil. At the end . Zaizai had to do the final touches himself.

When the actual filming started, Director Cai was afraid that Zaizai might feel embarrassed and told him not to come out until everything was ready. Instead, Zaizai arrived on the filming scene ahead of time. He squatted on the side of a dark, dirty road and stirred the foul smelling garbage can to get himself emotionally prepared for the filming.

Zaizai's fans who were on the set didn't recognized him at all.

Later, additional footage had to be shot, but Zaizai's schedule with 'Black & White' had already expired. So Zaizai's close friend, Xiu JieKai, was asked to substitute for Zaizai and he had to go through the same process of make-up and costume.

When the tramp part is aired, let's see if viewers can tell the difference between Zaizai and Xiu JieKai.

Zaizai plays "ruffian", and wins

In the drama Zaizai is very "pi" (ruffian/ rascal/ scoundrel), when encounter gunfight, only know how to avoid bullets
He is also very rich, frequently drives a sports car
In critical moments, will also draw a pistol

Under the strength of Director Cai Yue Xun who previously directed high quality idol dramas 'Meteor Garden', 'The Hospital' and others, and through the collaboration with Zhou Yu Min, Chen Yi Han, Zhang Jung Ning and numerous powerful idol actor/actress, "Black & White" started to broadcast this month April 11th in Gong Xi (PTV) channel and at the first broadcast announces a victory with 1.1 ratings. Moreover, Taiwan popular search website SOHU announces that B&W became the top playlist search in Sohu Taiwan, and in Mainland China TUDOU video website B&W was also the No. 1 most watch/ search drama online. Zaizai portrayal as Pizi/ Ruffian for the first time produces strong results and attracted many viewers with 'eyes wide open' .

Were you ever infatuated by Zai Zai's melancholic, warm and good boy image from 'Meteor Garden'? This time, Zai Zai in new drama B&W is going to make us 'drop our eyes glasses', a totally diffrent transformation of him into a frivilous playboy and a rascal, but deep inside, he is actually a righteous, kind-hearted pizi/ ruffian cop. In this drama, Chen Zai Tian's vivid and incisive portrayal became audience most popular dicussion focus. His skillful performance skills made people very impressed and see him in a new light. Do you want to know more about this completely new Zai Zai?

[Zaizai's Black & White]
From the beginning when Zai Zai entered the show business, he already gave people a deep impression with his melancholy image appearance. But what you see on the TV screen may not be true. So in actual fact, what kind of man is Zhou Yu Min? Dir Cai Yue Xun who brought Zai Zai into this entertainment industry has the right to speak. He said "Deep inside Zai Zai actually is not a melancholic prince, everyone have been deceived by him, he is actually a PiZi/ ruffain".That is why Dir Cai specially tailor-made this PiZi role for him in this drama. PiZi YingXiong (English title : Black&White) has a moral lesson behind the story. PiZi is a policeman who is both black and white , a PiZi/ Ruffian who is just one step away from being a Hero.

[Black : Taking a beating more than looking cool]

Zai Zai starts with driving a Porche, living in a big mansion, wearing branded clothes, a heavy spender in the beginning of the drama. Moreover this police officer also likes to flirt around, take liberty with the female suspect, when encounter gun battle legs will starts to be weak, eyes shut when open fire, even the numbers of being beaten is more than being a Hero and beating other people. Zai Zai's ability to "change face" makes audience surprised, when seeing beautiful woman his eyes will glows brightly, his lazy tease also slightly have a gentle intonation, feeling afraid when encountering danger having to express an cowardly expression, and movement fraught with uncertainty and fear, plus his careless appearance. Overall he is one cowardly guy, afraid to die, flirtatious and careless PiZi. Dir Cai said that this is not to undermine/ topple him but is specially tailor-made for him and Zai Zai himself feel 100% confidence with his performance.

[White : The gentle/ refined Zaizai can actual fight and risk his life]

Although careless, he always gets the good merit, the whole body is able to able draw in the hail of bullets, possesses a sharp intuition that ordinary people do not have, exceptional high level of memory and observation power, a high EQ capability and getting non-stop solving clues from some unknown people. Actually PiZi possess the heart of a Hero.

The simple-hearted Pizi do not demand happiness. The wonderful thing is, Zaizai will act 'Pi' (ruffian) when he needs to be 'Pi' and will appear bravely when the times come. In order to achieve higher performance quality, Zai Zai learnt how to use a gun, built up his muscles and did a lot of homework. Seeing Zai Zai running crazily, being tied up high above plus forcing into exploding building .Each of the scene personally completed by himself. Even martial arts instructor Jimmy Hung (son of Sammo Hung) gives respect to Zai Zai for his professional attitudes which left a deep impression in Jimmy's mind. Jimmy explained that especially in fighting scenes where one needs to jump down from high places, the both the elbow must be well protected to avoid injuries. So generally he will suggest that the actor must wear the protection gear to avoid being injured. But Zai Zai actually did not wear the protection gear and risk his life. Jimmy felt touched by Zai Zai's great attitude and performance. He also looked favourably on Zai Zai to pursue the action genre, asking Zai to consider focusing on action roles. Looks like Zai Zai is very determined to seal his pledge of 'I am an actor, not a vase'.

[Uncovering the Ruffian background]

This PiZi has extra-sensory perception.

PiZi Chen Zai Tian because of some kind of mistaken identity, from an ugly looking tramp he undergoes a transformation to become a police officer who avoid bullets, spending his life with his bored intuition. Has an uncertainty identity, driving famous car and owe a big mansion, and every month there will thousands of cash money being credited into his account to meet his heavy expenses. He goes to a convenient store to get a cup of coffee, talks about his unsolve cases and automatically he will get clues to solve the cases. He don't need to do much about work but is called the fast-solving case police officer. He understands that this is the basic qualifications that a police should have, if he stop becoming a policeman he will lose whatever he has now. He is incapable of explaining all this to everyone and even he himself is baffled.

Black & White, Episode 3

credit thank : iurgnotmis.wordpress.com

19 04 2009

Carefully walking around the unconscious (but not bleeding) Zai Tian, Ying Xiong (hereafter, referred to as Hero — because it rolls off the tongue and slides across the keyboard) approaches the creaking door.

Suddenly, a figure dashes out from behind the door. Instinctively, Hero raises his gun to face the aggressor. Their eyes lock, a glimpse of recognition registers. Without dropping the gun, Chen Lin reveals her surprise, “Why is it you guys? Did you pull the fire alarm?” Now further out in the hallway, she notices Zai Tian on the floor and demands briskly, “Did he get hit? By me?”

Hero breaks the tension by moving away his gun and holding up both hands in a defensive manner. In return, Chen Lin lowers hers and both of their attention turn to Zai Tian, who hasn’t stirred since he fell.

With a long gasp, Zai Tian wakes up. He is fine. Maybe a little shaken, but he’s as fine as he’ll ever be. The bullets did hit him, but they hit the bullet proof jacket he wore inside. (Besides, since Chen Lin shot the rounds from inside, the door must have slowed down the velocity of the bullets, so when Zai Tian was hit, the impact has already been reduced.)

Apologizing for shooting Zai Tian, Chen Lin explains that recently, she has been attacked and her apartment raided. When she heard the commotion triggered by the fire alarm, she feared that she might be under another attack. (The possibility of being burnt to death mustn’t sound as bad as being shot to death to a mob boss’ daughter.)

Chen Lin reasons that the attacks must be linked with her hiding the dead informant’s mother. Perhaps the people responsible for killing An Zai the Informant are behind this. (I fail to see how looking for a person could turn an apartment upside down like that. But at least, Gao Yi’s druggie sidekicks got the point across — give up the mother or die.)

She takes the two men inside to see An Zai’s mother, assuring them that all she intend to do is to keep the poor woman safe. While bickering with the cops, An Zai’s mother wanders out, mindlessly looking for her son. Chen Lin gently ushers the woman inside and into bed. Then, sitting down next to the quivering mother, she starts to sing quietly.

Her singing is echoed by Zai Tian’s humming. As if possessed by a strange power, Zai Tian closes his eyes and hums incoherently with Chen Lin’s soft voice. His recognition of the melody draws Chen Lin and Hero’s attention. The enchantment is broken when the mother falls into an uneasy sleep and Chen Lin stops singing.

Hero witnessed the entire scene with guilt in his eyes. Content with Chen Lin taking care of the sad woman, he hands her the family photo that belonged to An Zai and heads out.

After the faulty fire alarm interlude, Chen Lin decides to flex her muscle of power and actively have her men look for Gao Yi.

The next morning at the police station, Zai Tian pursuits the line of inquiry on his electric bill epiphany – inexplicably large electric usage may indicate the site of Dreamer production. Hulk*, the geeky hacker who partook the operation against Gao Yi, has narrowed down the possibilities to three overnight.

*The literal translation for the name is Hao Ke (浩克), which is really the Chinese name translation for Hulk. It’s possible that the name is meant to be an irony, highlighting his physicality (or a lack of) and character weakness, as exhibited in Episode 1. But it can also mean that his programming skill is Hulk-like, even though I’m having trouble taking this guy seriously.

Giddy with his brilliant contribution to the case, Zai Tian pats Hero on the shoulder and beams, “Hey bud, thanks for backin’ me up today.” Hero stares back at him as if Zai Tian is some kind of idiot, “I didn’t back you up today. I only wanted to solve the case. And by the way, you have three days left.” Remembering Hero’s threat that if Zai Tian doesn’t find a way to transfer out of Hero’s unit within a week, he may never live to see the light of the day, Zai Tian gulps loudly.

The search begins (with beautiful shots of lavish houses and a terrible actor for a butler):

They found it on their third (and last) try.

Gao Yi escapes, but the factory is compromised.

To celebrate their success, Zai Tian invites Xi Ying and Hero over to his house for a drink of beer, which is just next door. Oh irony, how I appreciate you!

(I reserved my suspicion from the last episode when the black out occurred, just so I wouldn’t spoil the wonderful irony for ya’ll. So, let’s hear those “OHHH that’s why he tested positive for the drug screen!” Cheesy )

Just to reiterate, when Xi Ying comes over to Zai Tian’s house, she discovers that his house shares the same pipe with the drug factory next door. Drinking contaminated water justifies the presence of Dreamer in Zai Tian’s system.

Ecstatic with the truth that will clean his name, Zai Tian rushes up to give Xi Ying a hug. Hero interjects between them, protecting Xi Ying from Casanova’s hands. They stand there nose to nose for a few seconds, until finally, Zai Tian steps away awkwardly.

(Just kiss already!)

Gao Yi may escape from the police, but he’s not so lucky against the extent of San Lian Hui’s control. Through a tapped phone line, San Lian Hui found out Gao Yi is staying in room 1505 of a hotel and sent an assassin to finish him off.

Fortunately for him, Gao Yi is too careful to be killed so easily. He is in fact staying in room 1506 and monitoring any activity in front of 1505, in case the person he negotiates with arrives with money. As soon as he spots a dark figure lurking inside 1505 with a gun, Gao Yi turns to leave and escapes narrowly.

The celebration party inside the police department is cut short when the Director scolds his men for letting Gao Yi escape with Dreamer. The cheery mood dissolves in an instant and the agents dissipate like a box of scattered marble.

To capture Gao Yi, the easiest way is to ask for help. And that, brings the gentlemen back to Chen Lin.

Ever the just police, Hero reasons with Chen Lin that if she knows where Gao Yi is, she should turn him over to the police. Because if she does anything illegally, he will personally put her behind the bars. Unbeknownest to Hero, Chen Lin is just as stubborn, perhaps even a little rebellious — she refuses point blank. As their heated argument gets louder and louder, An Zai’s mother hears her son’s name and approaches Hero to inquire about her son. Zai Tian steps in at this point and blatantly lies that he was just talking to An Zai downstairs. If he had known the mother is upstairs dining, he would’ve told An Zai to come up. Going bigger with the lie, Zai Tian even takes out his phone to fake a call to An Zai (he dials Hero’s number) — not a very smart move — the next thing he knows, An Zai’s mother is reaching up, gesturing the intent to speak to her son.

Hesitantly, Zai Tian hands over the phone. The mother takes it from Zai Tian with both hands and presses it close to her ears. “Hello?” she says in a shaky voice, “hello?” “Just pick it up and say ‘Hi mom’”, Zai Tian nudges Hero. “Hello?” the mother asks again uncertainly. Although against principle, Hero does as told and hangs up. The one “mom” brings tear to the woman’s eyes. She grasps the phone as if treasuring it with her life, but the line is cut. Not knowing what to do next, the sad woman fiddles with the phone with apprehension. Zai Tian inches closer and says, “Sorry auntie An, my phone has really bad reception. It probably dropped the call. I’m sure An Zai will call again… How about this, I will leave the phone to you, so when An Zai calls, you will be able to talk to him.”

Chen Lin shoots Zai Tian a quick, appreciative look at the manner in which he handled this. However, her look of approval turns into disgust when Zai Tian whispers later that he needs his phone back because it stores “a bunch of hot chick’s numbers”.

Life on the run isn’t too pleasant. Gao Yi sneaks into restaurants after dark to stuff down some food after a day of starvation.

(The lighting in this scene is horrible, but here, Gao Yi is putting plain pasta on a plate.)

Suddenly, lights flickered on. In front of him is a street full of local eateries decorated with colorful lanterns. He ventures on with pleasure and stops in front of a TV playing Korean drama.

He’s taking a trip. And this time, the dosage has been cranked up.

He takes one long, satisfying sniff and feels a shiver running through his four limbs. Then he bolts up and looks into the colorful street again.

A little boy walks toward him from the end of the street. Gao Yi reaches out and touches the boy. Running his finger across the name on the school uniform, Gao Yi’s expression cracks at his own name. Distantly, the phone rings. He turns lazily toward the source and locates a red phone. Picking it up, a voice chants, “Take everyone to heaven”. Over and over again.

The next morning in the bar, detective Zai Tian skips breakfast and orders a cup of coffee when the fax machine beeps.

The first fax reads:

To Detective Chen Zai Tian: Someone wants to go to heaven.

The second fax, which arrives briefly after the first, reads:

To Detective Chen Zai Tian: The tips are not always reliable.
PS: You’re not eating breakfast this morning?

(Anyone getting a chill from the mysterious informant’s omniscience?)

Gao Yi is found. Chen Lin is informed of his location and plans to seek him out alone.

But not as alone as she thinks. She is followed by Hulk.

Meanwhile, in the real world, a massive amount of Dreamer is leaked by Gao Yi to “bring people to heaven”. While the police send out most of its force to help contain the situation, Zai Tian fears it’s Gao Yi’s tactic to misdirect the police force to the mall while he strikes elsewhere (thanks to the reminder brought up by the second fax). Bringing the two faxes as proof, Zai Tian consults the Director. Unfortunately, his concern is dismissed once the identity of the fax sender is brought up. Sorry bud, credibility IS sadly important in the real world.

Hulk follows Chen Li to the subway station but quickly looses sight of her. Instead, he sees Gao Yi. CALLLLLLLL the police department RIGHT NOW! Oh, he does something even better: he calls Zai Tian.

Without hesistation, Hero makes a U-turn and heads to the subway.

Gao Yi has already taken siege of the subway.

With only Chen Lin to confront Gao Yi on the inside and the two frantic cops trying to stop the subway on the outside, timing has never been crowned with so much importance.

Zai Zai Zhou Yu Min-whole body painted with oil paint reminds only leave important part of the body clean.

In order to break in the procession as an actor,Zai Zai no longer remember as a guy with noble prince charming looks as he in TVBS-G “Black & White” to turn hostile goes down in the world the tramp with whole body and face being sprinkled with oil paint but because the make-up artist was shy,Zai Zai say "Only leave the important part clean"

When “Black & White” broadcast, receives quite high praise and now even CTV want to broadcast the drama. In the play Zhao You Ting,KingOne performance was outstanding,Zai Zai also no longer is the famous noble upper class prince charming, this time act as PiZi Chen Zai Tian but because his girlfriend was killed in an explosion,he disappeared but not only become a tramp but also suffers hunger and cold and even rob fast food shop.

Zai Zai this time having to change himself to became a ugly tramp look alike appearance have tried many times in getting the best tramp look that suits him,Director Cai Yue Xun paid hundreds of thousands to invites the special make-up artist from Hollywood, each time the make up takes around 3 hours. But after completing can only maintain for 4 hours otherwise because of the face temperature, the make up start melting.Zai Zai skin originally is sensitive so before the shooting because of the long working hours and stress, his face become tofu painted face(siewleng:-not sure of this)Because the make up kept melting, adjustment on the lighting have been adjusted many times even having to use glue to paste the mold directly on the face again.Zai sweat a lot because of the stuffy face.

Zai Zai body and clothes splashes with oil paint but as soon as Dir Cai looked Zai through the camera lens,he was surprise to see why Zai important part of the body so clean? After that he only realised that the make up artist is a female student and feel embarrassed to cover Zai important part with oil.At the end Zai himself who does the finishing parts on his body.(p.s. if i am her,i will be shy too LOL!)

When the shoot about to take place,Cir Cai worried that Zai might feel embarrased to come out so didn't ask him to come out the scene until the shooting starts but out of his surprised to see Zai himself took the initiative ahead of the time and run over the shooting scenes and squats in the darkness dirty roadside, one hand inside the rubbish bin trying to adapt himself the feeling of being a tramp.(p.s i am super proud of Zai as being a professional actor willing to explore every single scenes himself.Imagining Zai a famous idol turn himself into a dirty tramp and really willing to let go his idol image and made himself become ugly. This is what a true prefessional actor must have willing to adapt to the changes need by director and not always keeping his/her idol look all the time.My solute for Zai)

In order to make Zai Zai fans completely couldn't recognize Zai at all,the wonderful part is because that day Zai have another schedule work to do so couldnt make it on time so the intelligently him ask Shou Jie Kai to be his substitutes. As usual whole body and face being splashed with oil paint wearing the same clothes as Zai wore as the tramp. Now wait for the drama to broadcast to see whether audience able to differenciate who is Zai Zai and who is Shou Jie Kai?

Black & White Episode 2

Posted on April 12, 2009 by irugnotmis

Credit Source : IloVic@AF

Mob boss’ daughter gets mob boss’ daughter’s treatment — that is, 40-50 men in spiffy black suites coming to the police station to do three things 1) intimidate the local authority, 2) bring back the princess/the matriarch/the pearl of the mob, and 3) to make the welcome-back reception look magnificent.

Polite talk with spikes are exchanged between Che Jing, the San Lian Hui representative, and the director of the department. To make matter look orthodox on the appearance, a stubby lawyer finds his way out of the crowd.

He demands to see his client. Once in the interrogation room, the sly lawyer paces around the room and questions the necessity to keep Chen Lin in the police station. Ying Xiong steps up and explains that Chen Lin is involved with a drug related disappearance. Since the disappearance is crucial to the case, Chen Lin naturally becomes a primary suspect. (Since he isn’t exactly portrayed as someone methodical, I was impressed by the cool headed way he handled this.) The lawyer doesn’t budge. He sharply points out there is no direct evidence linking Chen Lin to the crime. Until there is sufficient evidence, his client should be free to go.

It’s Zai Tian’s turn to make some kind of contribution to keep Chen Lin a little longer (although he won’t be able to get what he wants out of her no matter how long she stays). He addresses the lawyer and suggests an alternative, “What if she attacks the legal force? Two patrol and one detective, is that enough?”

Chen Lin smiles sweetly at Zai Tian, as if to say, “funny you should mention that” and motions for the lawyer. She whispers something to his ear all the while peeking at the two uneasy detectives.

When she finishes, the lawyer speaks up,

My client tells me that she was forced to be handcuffed before any substantial evidence points to her connection with the disappearance. This violation of protocol clearly deprives my client’s personal freedom. Moreover, the discourse that took place during the interaction was marked by frivolous flirtation and inappropriate touching. My client merely reacted out of self-defense against those self-righteous detectives who clearly abuse the power granted to them by law.

Chen Lin’s look of triumph makes the usually smooth-tongued Zai Tian stutter as he struggles to defend himself.

When Chen Lin leaves, the director personally lectures the two detectives for their reckless action that is to result in the embarrassment of the whole Southern Branch. Before leaving the two pissed off detectives to sulk in the interrogation chamber, the director reminds them that they have one week left to either catch Gao Yi or bring back the 500 thousand USD they borrowed to use for the dealing.

In response to the Director’s scold, Ying Xiong cuffs Zai Tian and says, “Director, I can capture the first suspect,” then turning to Zai Tian, he demands sternly, “Chen Zai Tian, how do you explain your positive test results with Dreamer?” It turns out, when Xi Ying accidentally spilled the solution of Dreamer, she saw that the paper Zai Tian used to wipe his mouth reacted with the solution and makes the conclusion that Zai Tian is somehow involved with Dreamer. (I’m sure it’s one of those false positives or anomalies that Ms. Mad Skills just forgot to consider but will find out and add to her knowledge, somehow.)

To prove Zai Tian’s innocence, he agrees to have his blood drawn for a test. Yet, all four petri dishes showed positivity. But because the particular methodology Xi Ying developed has not been approved, Zai Tian cannot be arrested or investigated.

Now instead of Xi Ying perfecting her methodology, she is going to file her result and get it approved so it can become a legalized procedure. And it’s up to Zai Tian to prove, before the method is approved, how he ends up testing positive for Dreamer. Zai Tian’s situation doesn’t look to bright from where I’m standing, but it motivates him to work harder on the case.

Faced with a problematic case like this, Zai Tian pets and coos a black fax machine in a bar where he gets most of his leads on cases from. Ying Xiong on the other hand, is spotted to be deep in thought in the lab.

Later that day, Ying Xiong receives a call informing him the vehicle carrying the dead informant’s brother is found to be abandoned. Sensing the bad news, his temper flares up when he sees Zai Tian in the usual sleazy mode. He yells at Zai Tian for being incompetent and storms out the door. (Yikes, someone has a bad temper, though, Zai Tian’s happy-go-lucky ways don’t make it any better either.)

After confirming the informant’s brother’s death, Ying Xiong returns to the crime scene, hoping to find more information about the murder. He finds a phone number and the informant’s family portrait, which he gazes thoughtfully at.

Zai Tian returns to the bar to see if there is any fax for him. He is disappointed once more. So he sits there sipping beer, waiting for the fax. (That boy and his passivity!) But before the bar closes, the phone rings. All that waiting paid off!

The fax reads, “To Mr. Chen Zai Tian: the last clue will perish soon, hurry and protect.”

After leaving the crime scene, Ying Xiong heads towards the hospital to seek out the only surviving suspect from the gun fight scene the day prior. On his way there, he sees a hooded man dressed in complete black sitting on the side of the road. (Gasp, can it be Death himself!?) Ying Xiong takes a hard look at the oddly dressed man and enters the hospital. Inside the hospital room, a nurse is tending to the sick.

Ying Xiong asks when the wounded man will wake up, for he is an important clue to an investigation. The nurse replies coyly that perhaps tomorrow, when he wakes up. Once out of the hospital room, the woman changes her attire on her way down the stairs and exits the building with a smirk. She walks to the hooded man to delivery the news of successfully completed the task…

When Ying Xiong leaves the hospital room, he encounters Chen Lin coming for a visit. He blocks her way and says exasperatedly, “Miss Chen, can you tell me why you are always at places connected to the case?” “Can’t I come to see the doctor?” “You were at informant An’s place the day he was murdered, then you took away his mother… But that’s not enough for you, you had to kill his brother as well.” At the mention of the man’s brother, Chen Lin turns sharply and asks, “What happened to his brother?” “Stop pretending. He was killed within an hour on the road. Don’t tell me you weren’t behind this. Did you kill them all because you are afraid they will leak the fact that San Lian Hui is the source of Dreamer?” She breaks free of his grasp at that point and looks him in the eye, “I take no part in whatever San Lian Hui does.” Then she walks off.

Ying Xiong is desperate for someone to blame, he yells after her, “You are the mistress of San Lian Hui and you expect me to believe that you don’t participate in San Lian Hui related activities? Then what do you do?” She turns and replies lightly, “I only take part when it has to do with those I care about.”

When Zai Tian finds Ying Xiong with his crumpled sheet of fax and tries to convince him that their last clue is on the verge of death, Ying Xiong snaps at him, accusing him of being careless and irresponsible. He takes no pain to conceal his condescension and retorts that mysterious informant or not, he is not going to believe anything that comes out of a drug-addict’s mouth. (Ying Xiong is firmly convinced that Zai Tian is a drug user to test positive on all four tests.)

As they are speaking, the man in the hospital struggles for his last breath.

And Gao Yi takes a trip with his Dreamer.

To lighten up the mood a little:

Zai Tian is sipping beer in front of a large TV at home. (Him and his beer!) But his mind is on what Wu Ying Xiong said to him. He murmurs to himself, “Don’t believe me? Don’t you cry when you find out I was right!” As if to punish him for his unkind (and childish) thoughts, all the lights in his house went off, leaving Zai Tian wondering to himself, “What?! Have I said something wrong?” Hah!

The brief electric outage inspires Zai Tian as he carries a tiny candle to search for food in the fridge. He remembers Xi Ying’s words that the production of Dreamer requires a constant temperature below zero degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit). He looks at the dark fridge and thinks to himself, “It must require a huuuuuge freezer.” When the light flickers on and Zai Tian habitually blows out the candle, another idea occurs to him as the smoke from the candle rises up.

It would take a big electric bill to keep a large production factory at a constant zero degrees. And the location of any abnormal electric usage sites may be where Dreamer is being produced.

The next morning, the news of the only survivor’s death puts a promising lead, but it opens a brand new one (albeit a biased one). Since Ying Xiong saw Chen Lin going to the hospital, he is requesting a search warrant to search her house. Because San Lian Hui is so big, they get no search warrant. BUT, the director doesn’t necessarily say no to Ying Xiong’s desire to pursuit this line of investigation either.

Ying Xiong insists on going alone, it’s Zai Tian that yells some sense into the stubborn tough boy. They end up going together, like partners should.

The security of the building turns out to be hard to penetrate. The security guard insists that either the two detectives contact Chen Lin directly or they can request a search warrant. Otherwise, they were not to enter. Ying Xiong is not acquainted with civilians saying no to him, as the conversation approaches holy battleground, Zai Tian steps in.

He pretends to be in need of going to the restroom and distracts the security guard as he attempts to rush into the building. This gives Ying Xiong an opportunity to pull the fire alarm.

While the residents evacuate the building, Zai Tian and Ying Xiong search for the unit belongs to Chen Lin. As Zai Tian approaches the door in giddy self-congratulation, two rounds are fired at his chest. The force of the shot throws him back and against the opposite door. He flops onto the floor, unconscious.

Note translator :

This episode is SO much more enjoyable without the few overacting supporting casts.

I like the added mysterious informant to explain Zai Tian’s success as a detective, as he is clearly no brainiac. It opens up the door for speculation, the most obvious ones being: Who is the mystery informant? How does the informant know so much about the criminal organizations? Why is the informant helping the police, if (s)he is helping the police at all, etc.

In terms of acting, the casting group did a great job. I was initially skeptical about Mark being Ying Xiong because he is the least experienced actor with one of the heaviest roles. But on screen, he is so much better than some of the so-called more experienced supporting actors (yes, Mr. Team leader, I’m looking at you).

ZaiZai plays ruffian with red-hot premiere

ZaiZai plays ruffian with red-hot premiere; charm wins over Jerry Yan, Tuesday April 14, 2009 Taiwan

Source: Liberty Times
Translation: Sarah @ http://asianfanatics.net

Vic Zhou (ZaiZai)’s idol drama ‘Black & White’ premiered on Saturday on PTV, and ratings opened with 1.11, winning over Jerry Yan’s ‘Starlit’ finale ratings of 0.5. ZaiZai’s ruffian ‘smokey eyes’ attracted 649,000 people!

‘Black & White’ premiered on Saturday and received good feedback from netizens. Many praised ZaiZai’s performance, saying that he had escaped his melancholy prince image, and he did an extremely good job in portraying a frivolous and playboy policeman. Plus, with his many sufferings, explosions, sprinting through tunnels, sweating from wearing a suit in a non air-conditioned building, and finally bumping into Director Cai, who is known for his slow filming. So although Zaizai doesn’t have as many action scenes as Mark Zhao, he did not get to taste any sweetness either!

Besides a breakthrough in ZaiZai’s acting, newcomer Mark Zhao and Ivy Chen’s performance also received praise from netizens and they commented that they didn’t even seem like newcomers. And Kingone Wang’s classic drug-user look attracted comments like “Has he really done drugs before?” Also, with a Hollywood expert helping with the explosion scenes, even Director Cai was in awe of the superb ‘explodes but not harming any nearby buildings’ technology. Towards the good ratings, he said modestly: “Actually there is still room for improvement!”

Towards his ex-F4 member ZaiZai’s good results, although Jerry Yan wasn’t able to watch the first episode due to work commitments, he was full of good comments. His manager Fenny expressed: “He’s also worked with Director Cai, and right from the beginning, he said that he is definitely anticipating this drama!” She also added that Jerry only places importance on doing a good job as an actor; he won’t care too much about things like ratings which he can’t control.

Vic Zhou talks about his Ruffian/ Pizi role in Black & White

Star Express [Chen Zai Tian] Vic Zhou Yu Min

"Focus! Concentrate on what you're currently doing. Put all your heart into it. Then it will be your best performance."
-- Vic Zhou Yu Min

He is a ruffian, but he is also a hero.
In the eyes of Director Cai, he is one of those rare good actors who dare to challenge and try to innovate.

For him, "Black & White" is a good drama where he gets to showcase the acting skills he has been polishing up in the last eight years through working on "Meteor Garden," "Mars," and numerous other TV series and movies.

"I enjoy acting in front of the camera!" says the big Asian star in the behind-the-scene interview by the production crew, his face full of smile.

Zaizai was immersed in the happiness that acting brought him, which often spread to everyone else on the scene and rejuvenated the tired and exhausted production team.

He was easy-going and not on a high horse, coming and going together with the crew, living in the dorm and eating boxed meals.

Through the camera's lens, on the scene, Zhou Yu Min often contemplated quietly on how to better render his character alive. He frequently interacted with other artists and never hesitated to do his best for perfection.

As Director Cai has said, "Black & White" is a drama originated from an idea in which Zaizai was the central character.

"We found Zaizai possessed with the special talent of a comedian. We hoped that he could make use of his talent. Zaizai was also interested in developing this aspect of him."

Pi Zi and Ying Xiong, Chen Lin and Xi Ying, through a series of destined and intertwined stories, are connected with one another.

They are ready to tell the world about their love, friendship and dreams.

As the PiZi policeman officer, Zhou Yu Min, who loves to act, will take you to the seaport city to charge forward bravely with his fellow partners.

Interviewer: Ava, hereinafter referred to as A (Questions are presented in written format )
Interviewee: Vic, hereinafter referred to V

A: As an Asian superstar, you've been to a lot of places because of work. What is your impression of Kaohsiung as a city?

V: In my impression, Kaohsiung is city of very good urban planning. Especially this time we have spent a long time there filming , I find that it has a lot of places which can be chosen as filming locations.

Different from Taipei, Kaohsiung is a seaport city.
In Taipei, if you want a location with both the city and ocean views, you have to go to Dansui or some other remote places. But right inside the city part of Kaohsiung, one can readily find locations connected to the ocean for filming.

It is really nice, sort of like Hong Kong. Having the similar advantages of beautiful scenery, ocean view and night view, Kaohsiung can follow the same path of urban development.

A: you have tried many new things in the drama. Did some of them take you longer to narrow down?

V: In this series, the thing that took me the longest time to narrow down should be the issue of how to portray Chen Zai Tian.

For me, there were, in fact, thousands of different ways to render this character. I spent the most time considering what kind of acting styles our targeted age groups of audience would expect to see, what kind of acting styles would be acceptable to the director, and what kind of styles I could perform and would not feel uncomfortable with.

A: During such a long filming process, were you impressed by anything?

V: The complete "Black & White" took nine months, almost ten months, to finish shooting. What impressed me was the acting styles of the new generation of actors, particularly Mark whom I had acted opposite most often in the drama.

It is his first acting role, but he has very keen interests in acting. When he was acting, you could tell that he had put a lot of thoughts into his role.

At the beginning, we were not used to each other's acting methodologies, for we were not sure of when and what kinds of emotions the other would display.

But halfway through the filming process, we had reached mutual understanding and developed a good rapport. If you give me something, I will know what to respond.

The game we often played was to come up with new dialogues on the spot. It sometimes worked more effectively on the scene than what was originally arranged in the script.

A: Compared with your past roles, Chen Zai Tian seems to be a new type of character. Did the role pose a special challenge to you?

V: Actually, this role does not completely overturn the previous roles I have portrayed. In the past, besides the introvert type of deep, quiet roles such as Hua Ze Lei, I have tried the very extrovert type of open role like Chen Ling in Mars.

A: Please share ~ While the filming was a bit long (laughs), among your many experiences in dramas, what kind of experience was filming "Black & White"? What impact did it have on you?

V: Filming "Black & White" ... It is not "Black & White" but rather dramas directed by Cai Yue Xun. You must be psychologically prepared. That is they will never be finished as scheduled (laughs). It is a unique experience.

It's a very painful for an actor when filming won't be wrapped up as planned for it may interrupt your other jobs.

The point is that knowing he would be late from the first collaboration, why were there the second collaboration of Mars and then the third collaboration of "Black and White" ?

I think the most important thing is that I know Director Cai produces good dramas. He has always wanted to create a new style of Taiwanese drama outside the current idol dramas that had flooded the market. "Black & White" is such a drama.

During the process of deciding to accept a role and chatting with the producer, I always demand to know what age my role is set to be. If the age is set to be in the age group that is too young, I'm really sorry, but it's kind of difficult for me to accept. The age and requirements set by Director Cai were older. The character looked tempting and could stimulate an actor's desire to perform.

A: In the future, what kind of stories and roles would you like to challenge?

V: I've answered this question many times. As a matter of fact, I've been telling everyone that I so much want to play a role with split personalities.

The reasons is that I may spend several months living the life of my role. I like to blend into my role. I live almost the same life as my role in the drama as the filming progresses.

So if it is possible, I like to play two roles or even a role with multiple personalities, then I can gain and accumulate even more experiences from one drama. This is something I want to try.

A: Would you share with us the concept or idea that has influenced you the most?

V: the concept that has influenced me the most... Ah, after I became an artist, once an artist said something to me which I have always remembered and find to be very useful, i.e, "Focus! Focus on your work. Focus on the thing you're currently working."

when I apt to feel tired or when my emotions on the scene are affected by other factors, that is the time I need to FOCUS. Focus on putting the intervening matters behind me and concentrate on the role. So I find it very important to me.

A: What do you most want to say to Director Cai and the production team of "Black and White"?

V: Ha, I most want to say to Director Cai is that do not shoot every drama with such a driven mentality that you burn out. We have collaborated three times.

He directed Meteor Garden to the extent his face looked so dark; it was not suntan, it was the color one gets from lack of sleep.

In the final stage of shooting Mars, Director Cai's mother, Mama Cai, had to come to the set to perform acupuncture on him. Afterward, he started to call 5, 4, 3, 2,.. and then he fainted and had to be carried out on a stretcher. We continued and it was the photographer that called 'cut'!

[Insertion: Everyone at Prajna Works burst out in a hearty laugh.]

He still worked in the same fashion with "Black & White".
I hope he will take care of himself.

In addition, I'd like to say to the production team of "Black & White" that everyone has been working very hard!. This drama has the highest demands not only for its quality but also for the quality of the cast and the staff involved.

Many times we felt stressful at work under such high standards. But rest assured, for "Black & White" will stay in our hearts for the rest of our lives. Perhaps, many years later we can all tell our offsprings that we were once involved in such a drama (laugh) and how it has affected our lives. It's really great!

~~THE END~~

Black & White Episode 1 (Recap)

Harmonious right? Hah, not if you count the phone calls and the angry mother who is making the calls.

The calls are from the girl’s mother, demanding to know why the girl didn’t come home last night. The daughter replies lazily that she has just turned 18 and is now an adult (and hence it’s okay to indulge in adult-like behavior, like, one-night stand — of course, this second half is left unsaid to prevent further inflaming the already volatile mother). She removes the phone from her ear with a wince and says to the man lying next to her, “Hey, my mother wants to talk to you”. He waves it off as if to chase away a fly and says, “Tell her not to worry, I’m a cop.” At that, the girl inches closer and says sweetly, “I forgot to tell you last night, my name is Lin Ke Le…” “Coke…” he chuckles to himself at the homonym.

**[Ke Le is typically the shorthand for either Coca-cola or Pepsi, depending on the prefix. In other uses, it can mean the ability to be happy or the state of being happy.]

She rolls her eyes at his reaction — she probably gets that a lot — and continues, “My mother is your North District Branch’s… Director.” What?! Yeah.

That’s how Chen Zai Tian the riffraff (thug/rascal/punk/coward) is forced to the South District Branch.

Perhaps that is all for the better.

The South District Branch is one intense place to be. Today they are on a mission to capture a drug manufacturing organization called Blue Butterfly, specialized in a hallucinogen named Dreamer. (Fancy code names, those drug dealers sure know how to market their products.) Detective Wu Ying Xiong and his hacker friend from the South Branch are the bait for this operation. With money in a sports bag, the two of them arrive at the destined exchange spot and nervously anticipate the dealer. Instead, they received an express delivery containing a phone. Without hesistation, Ying Xiong picks up the phone just as it starts to ring. They are instructed to go to the men’s room and show that they are not carrying any weapon.

Surprise to them both, they are attacked in the restroom to verify that no listening devices are attached. Then, the voice in the phone instructs them to head towards the subway.

They were given 15 seconds to get on the subway across from them, or the exchange will be called off. In an effort to continue the pursuit, the two baits ignored all warnings of caution and hopped on the subway weaponless, and lost all contact with the base.

Frustrated at Ying Xiong’s disregard for danger, the investigation team leader lashes out on a nearby chair.

Having ensured no one is following, the baits are cornered by four men in black on the subway. They are taken to a deserted factory where the lofty mastermind descends the ground from a splendid height in a cart, like a king stepping from his mighty throne.

He tosses them a tiny vial of translucent liquid with a blue glow and boasts that only they, Blue Butterfly, can make Dreamer as concentrated as 98%. And the butterfly on the bottle is their symbol.

Digression: If they are called Blue Butterfly, it would be more iconic to make the butterfly blue.

Money is exchanged, as Ying Xiong bends down to examine the product, Gao Yi, the mastermind receives a call. The call informs him that the two men at the exchange are in fact undercover policemen. With the covers blown, a gun fight immediately takes place. In the end, Gao Yi escapes the factory with the money.

Chen Zai Tian’s first day at the South District Branch is relaxing so far. On his way to the department, he stops at a local coffee shop and takes the opportunity to flirt with the waitress.

I’m a transfer detective of the South District Branch. Today is my first day on the job. When I drove by, I was allured by a wonderful smell. I thought it was the coffee, but it turns out to be you.

Flustered but pleased, the waitress covers her mouth to giggle. The coffee shop’s owner interjects, “Are all detectives sweet-mouthed like you?” “Nah. Nowadays, there aren’t many sweet-mouthed good-looking policemen who also happen to be good at what they do. I’m probably the only one.” (He’s so full of himself, yet it’s endearing.) Apparently Chen Zai Tian does have a reputation that proceeds him. Not only is he infamous for having a way with women, he is also the Case King, named after his efficiency at solving cases.

As they speak, Gao Yi with his briefcase of money runs into Zai Tian. Gao Yi drops the briefcase, picks up a gun and shoots blindly in the direction of Ying Xiong who is pursuing him like a hawk chasing its prey. Fight or flight kicks in instantly, Zai Tian ducks down and covers his ears to evade the threat of bullets.

When Gao Yi intercepts a car and drives away with his money and Dreamer, the chase is finally put to an end. At which point, Zai Tian walks out from his hiding place and points a gun at Ying Xiong, mistaking him for one of the bad guys. Much to his embarrassment, Ying Xiong grabs the gun from him and aims it at his face instead.

The aftermath of the chase isn’t too pretty a picture, but at least, Mr. Black meets Mr. White.

Ying Xiong is not the only one who’s less than thrilled about the outcome of the operation. Back in safety, Gao Yi is filled with rage for being betrayed (after all how would the cops know how to contact him for drugs in the first place if everything is kept in secret as they should be?) and he vows be bestow the cruelest vengeance upon whoever betrayed him.

Back in the police department, the ball of responsibility is tossed around for the failure of this big budget operation. In the end, the director of the district department decides that since Mr. Wu and Mr. Chen are the reason they can’t capture the man behind Blue Butterfly — nope, not incompetency on the team leader’s part — then they must work together and redeem themselves.

Of course, here we have them wearing white and black respectively.

Ying Xiong is on it once his boss turned his back. He calls his informant for a list of participants involved in the organization. After some persuasion that felt like squeezing the last bit of toothpaste out of an already empty tube, the informant reluctantly agrees to meet with Ying Xiong at his place in an hour. That gives Ying Xiong an hour to spear. With his mind set on solving the case, he turns to his good friend Lan Xi Ying (the ravishing Janine Chang).

Xi Ying is the forensic researcher in the lab.

And she’s as good as they come. One look at the sample bottle of Dreamer, she is able to discern the production pattern of the vial and narrow down 15 to 16 factories that are capable of making such containers. (Believability aside, this chick’s got mad skills!) While Ying Xiong is discussing the case with Xi Ying, Zai Tian tours around the lab looking for entertainment. Carelessly putting down the cup of ice tea Xi Ying poured him earlier, Zai Tian grabs the prosthetic skull on the desk as a puppet and plays with it. When called off by Ying Xiong, Zai Tian puts down the skull and grabs the wrong cup. He takes a sip and spits it right out — rabbit urine.

Unabashed from the embarrassment earlier, Zai Tian makes certain Xi Ying is single before announcing his plan to pursuit her. In his words: he hasn’t dated anyone that carried as much perfectional charisma as Xi Ying and he is dying to see if she’s good at other areas as well.

Zai Tian’s crude inference to sex irks Ying Xiong. He turns around snaps for Zai Tian to shut his trap. Moving closer, Ying Xiong threatens, “I don’t care how, but find a way to get out of my sight before you perishes like the orange”. As he speaks through clenched teeth, he squeezes the orange in hand, squirting the juice all over Zai Tian’s face.

Zai Tian on the other hand takes no further heed of Ying Xiong’s warning but finds it reasonable to get away from him. Ying Xiong’s approach to solve cases may be effective, but it’s also very extreme. Zai Tian doesn’t want to rest in a coffin yet, so he seeks out the director and tries to charm the director. Sorry buddy, not workin’. He is given two choices: 1) go back to help Ying Xiong 2) quit his job and lose his car, his house, and (by logical extension,) the 101 gold digging chicks who await him every night.

An hour later, Ying Xiong is at his informant’s place — with Zai Tian tagging along.

Sure enough, the informant’s dead by the time they got there. (Should have kept his head low and ran when he had the chance.)

Ying Xiong took the death hard. Not only did they lose a lead on the case, he feels responsible for causing his informant’s death. With a final promise to keep the dead man’s family safe, Ying Xiong marches away.

Back in the car, Zai Tian comforts, “I know how you feel.” “YOU DON’T KNOW ANYTHING!” Ying Xiong slaps the steering wheel hard with his hand. “I do. But for informants, shouldn’t there be a consensus that the risk is death?” “He is not an informant. He’s part of San Lian Hui” “WHAT? San Lian Hui? The biggest illegal organization whose symbol is a lotus?! Are you going against them now?” At this point, Ying Xiong reveals the pact he made with the dead man. In exchange for the informant to find out the source of Blue Butterfly, Ying Xiong agrees to arrange for the man’s brother to be released from prison on good behavior and allow the two brothers to spend time with their dying mother.

Now the informant is killed, Ying Xiong fears for his family’s life.

And unfortunately for everyone, the fears are coming true.

The informant’s brother, who is in the process of transporting is being attacked. Meanwhile, his mother is being taken away by a “pretty girl with long hair”.

Zai Tian caught a glimpse of the girl helping the mother in a white van and accidentally remembers the license plate (a skill developed from memorizing hot chicks’ phone numbers). They successfully intercept the van but the mother is no where to be found.

Zai Tian attempts to charm the pretty driver into revealing the truth, but his bad habit of not noticing where his hands are going ends him up on the hood of the car. This frail looking girl is a master of taekwondo. It takes Ying Xiong’s iron arms to bind her down. Finally, charing her with obstruction of justice, the cops arrested the driver and brought her to the police station.

Once in the interrogation room, she is roped down and threatened with starvation until she spits out the truth.

Unaffected, rather enjoying the excitement, she says playful,

I told you I don’t know anything. If you don’t believe me, bite me!

(Oh she’s gonna be one fiendish little trouble!)

As if to equip the girl more amusement, soon after Zai Tian decides to starve the girl, Ying Xiong brings in a large bag of fast food. Zai Tian reaches out to grab it, but Ying Xiong pushes it towards the girl and says nicely, “Missy, enjoy.”

In the lab, Xi Ying made a discovery after incidentally spilling the solution of Dreamer.

Outside of the police department, a row of cars rush to the department, surrounds it and congesting the flow of traffic. Pressures are exerted to those hold superior offices in the department. Then finally, the team leader bursts into the interrogation room and scolds the two clueless cops for taking the San Lian Hui mob boss’ daughter into custody.

Yep, Chen Lin, the mischievous girl in front of them is the mob boss’ daughter.

Catatan dari translator :

It’s still in the early stage, but I think this drama has the potential to develop and be great. The intensity of the plot is still lacking at this point — not that the plot isn’t intricate enough, but action/police drama is a well established genera; when placed in the larger context, it pales alongside other excellent productions.

It’s a pity when a perfectly well paced scene is broken up by the overexertion of the supporting actors. Despite that, there is a certain appeal about the main characters and the way they mesh that makes it interesting to see how things will unfold in future episodes.
